Bangladesh edge Uzbekistan 3-2 for historic win
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh’s long association with hockey has finally entered a new chapter.
For the first time, the country has fielded a senior women’s national team assembled for the ongoing Asian Games qualifiers in Indonesia and they have wasted little time making their mark. After earning a gritty draw against Chinese Taipei in their opening match on Thursday, the newcomers followed it up with a historic breakthrough: a 3–2 victory over Uzbekistan in their second group fixture, sealing the first-ever win for Bangladesh in women’s international hockey.
The historic victory began to take shape in the 11th minute when Sharika Rimon cleanly converted a penalty corner to open the scoring.
The lead was fleeting, however, as Uzbekistan’s Madinabonu Khujaeva equalised from another penalty corner just a minute later.
Undeterred by the immediate setback, Bangladesh continued to press with remarkable composure.
In the 24th minute, Kona Akter found the back of the net to restore their advantage, sending the debutants into the half-time interval with a well-deserved 2-1 lead.
Returning from the dressing room, Bangladesh looked to consolidate their dominance.
Airin Akter Riya capitalised on a brilliantly executed penalty corner to give her side a crucial two-goal cushion.
Uzbekistan threatened to spoil the party when Zulkhumor Khaydarova converted a penalty corner in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, hinting at a late and dramatic comeback.
However, the Bangladesh defence held remarkably firm.
The remainder of the match saw a gritty stalemate with no further goals, cementing a monumental victory for the trailblazing side.
Airin, whose crucial strike in the second half ultimately proved to be the match-winner, was deservedly named Player of the Match.
The forward has been in scintillating form; during Thursday's thrilling 10-goal encounter against Chinese Taipei, she etched her name into the annals of Bangladeshi sport by scoring the nation's very first international goal in women's hockey.
Visibly elated after maintaining her goal-scoring form on Friday, she remarked, "I am absolutely thrilled to be named the best player in today's game. Every single member of our team supported me, and it is entirely down to them that I have been able to achieve this."
The result leaves Bangladesh sitting proudly at the summit of Group A, having amassed four points from their opening two fixtures.
The mathematics of the tournament are straightforward: the group champions and runners-up will advance to the semi-finals, and all four semi-finalists will secure a coveted berth at the forthcoming Asian Games in Japan.
Bangladesh now find themselves in an incredibly favourable position.
As they look ahead to Sunday’s final group match against Hong Kong, securing even a single point will be enough to all but guarantee their semi-final spot and keep their extraordinary Asian Games dream very much alive.
