Bangladesh T20 Exit Sparks Criticism of Asif Nazrul’s Role
Bangla Press Desk: A major controversy has emerged in Bangladesh cricket following allegations that the country’s decision to withdraw from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was influenced by a hardline stance taken by interim government adviser Asif Nazrul.
Questions are being raised over why Bangladesh did not participate in the tournament and whether any external or internal interests played a role behind the scenes.According to sources involved in cricket administration, the issue escalated on 3 January after the then Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors held an online meeting following the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL. They reportedly agreed to seek clarification from the International Cricket Council (ICC) the following day.
However, the situation changed dramatically that same night when Law and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul posted on social media, stating that Bangladesh should not travel to India for the T20 World Cup due to security concerns. His statement, it is alleged, effectively shut down the scope for further negotiation.
He later reiterated his position in meetings and maintained that Bangladesh should not participate in the event in India, while suggesting alternative arrangements such as shifting venues to Sri Lanka.
A letter issued on 13 January by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, signed by then secretary Mahbub-Ul Alam, formally advised the BCB against travelling to India. It also indicated that government support would be provided if matches were held outside India.
Following this directive, the BCB reportedly attempted to explore alternative arrangements, including shifting the venue to Sri Lanka, but failed to secure support from other ICC member boards.
As a result, Bangladesh was ultimately excluded from the World Cup participation process and missed the tournament after losing a vote at ICC level.
Several former officials and cricket stakeholders have since criticised the decision-making process, claiming that Bangladesh’s diplomatic approach failed and that the withdrawal resulted in reputational damage for the country’s cricket.
Some former directors have alleged that the decision was influenced by personal judgement rather than institutional consensus, while others argue that cricket administrators also share responsibility for the failure to secure participation or alternative arrangements.
Sports observers note that Bangladesh’s absence from a major global tournament has raised concerns about governance, coordination between ministries and the cricket board, and the country’s international sporting diplomacy.
The matter is now expected to be reviewed through an official investigation announced by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, although a committee has yet to be formed.
