BUET student Sreeshant sent to jail
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Sreeshant Roy to be sent to jail in a case filed under the Cyber Security Ordinance.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after the investigating officer of the case, Shahjahan Siraj, produced him before the court, seeking his custody.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Advocate Saiful Islam pleaded for his bail, arguing that all the charges brought against him are bailable. However, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon opposed the plea, saying the court may deny bail considering the overall circumstances, even if the sections are bailable.
After hearing both sides, the judge fixed Thursday for the bail hearing and ordered that Sreeshant be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, Sreeshant used a pseudonymous Facebook account to post obscene, indecent, and religiously offensive comments targeting Muslim women and Islam between 8 June and 7 September this year.
Following investigation, police identified him as the person behind the fake ID. BUET security officer Md Afghan Hossain filed a case against him at Chawkbazar Police Station on Wednesday.
The plea for his detention mentioned that tension has been prevailing on the BUET campus centring around the accused. Police also seized an HP laptop, an iPad, and a Symphony button mobile phone from his possession, where evidence was reportedly found supporting the charges.
