Bangla Press Desk: Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has officially given the green light to Elon Musk-owned Starlink to launch commercial satellite services in the country, making Bangladesh the second country to do so in South Asia.
Prof Yunus approved the “Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) Satellite Services Operator License” for Starlink on Monday. The services are expected to be available from mid-May. Starlink is also working on a tariff plan and has secured permission for providing commercial services without using the local gateway for 90 days.
The Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said launching Starlink’s virtually uninterruptible internet services across Bangladesh became a demand of the mass in the wake of repeated internet supply cuts enforced by the past autocratic Awami League regime in its final days.
Apart from fulfilling the demand, the chief adviser also wished to bolster Bangladesh’s investment potentials and therefore asked US tycoon Elon Musk to bring his services to Bangladesh within 90 days.
