Court grants six-day remand for ex-DGFI official Afzal Naser

Bangla Press Desk:   A Dhaka court on Monday placed former director of the Directorate of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and sacked Lieutenant Colonel, Md Afzal Naser, on a six-day remand in a murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibullah Pias passed the order, as policemen produced Naser before the court. They pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand in the case field over the killing of one Delwar Hossain during the 2024 Uprising.

According to the case statement, Delwar Hossain joined a rally on July 19, 2024 during the anti-discrimination student movement, in front of a fruit market in Mirpur-10 area.

The rally came under attack from some unidentified goons, who fired shots indiscriminately at the protesters. Delwar got wounded and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on July 21, 2024. Delwar's widow, Liza Akter, filed the case on July 6, 2025, over the incident.

Lt Col Md Afzal Naser was detained by a team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from a house in the capital's Mirpur DOHS area on Monday.

Afzal Naser hails from Mojirkhil area under Senbag upazila of Noakhali district. He joined the army on July 4, 1984. He served in DGFI from March 2006 to March 2008.

DB joint commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam said Afzal Naser was arrested based on interrogation leads from former army officer lieutenant general (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury, known as one of the key figures behind the 1/11, and former DG of DGFI, lieutenant general (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled.
