Court Sends Ex-DGFI Official Manjil Haider to Remand in Murder Probe
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Friday placed former DGFI official, dismissed Major Manjil Haider Chowdhury, 48, on a four-day remand in a case filed over the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud in the New Market area of the capital, linked to the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order after the investigation officer of the case, Detective Branch Inspector Md Amzad Hossain Talukder, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.According to the remand petition, the accused allegedly assisted in suppressing the anti-discrimination student movement in coordination with ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader.
It was further stated that he used his position at DGFI to coordinate with leaders and activists of the then ruling Awami League and its affiliated organisations, holding meetings across Dhaka to plan the suppression of the movement. He allegedly provided instructions and financial support to those involved.According to the case statement, on 19 July 2024, businessman Abdul Wadud was killed after being allegedly shot by Awami League activists under the direction of the named accused. A murder case was filed by the victim’s brother-in-law, Abdul Rahman, against 130 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former road transport minister Obaidul Quader.
Earlier, on 9 April, he was arrested from the DOHS area of Mohakhali in the capital.
