Crime wave grips Gazipur
Bangla Press Desk: Gazipur appears to be turning into a crime hotspot, with murders, muggings, robberies and extortion now a daily occurrence — often in broad daylight — leaving residents in fear. On Friday morning, police recovered a headless, dismembered body stuffed into two travel bags on Tongi Station Road. The victim was identified through fingerprints as Oli Mia, 37, son of Suruj Mia of Komirpur village in Narsingdi Sadar. Oli, a bus helper of Azmeri Paribahan, was killed about two days ago, police suspect. His head is yet to be found. On Thursday night, journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin was hacked and slaughtered in broad daylight at Chandna Chowrasta. Police believe he was targeted for recording a video of an assault. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) officials said. DC (Crime–North) Md Robiul Hasan said CCTV footage led investigators to the suspects — known snatcher Ketu Mizan and his wife Golapi were detained in Salna, Al Amin in Turag, and Swadhin in Bhabanipur.
Tuhin, a staff reporter of Dainik Protidiner Kagoj, hailed from Vhatipara village in Mymensingh’s Phulbaria upazila. He leaves behind his wife and two young sons, aged five and two. Journalists in Gazipur formed a human chain on Friday morning demanding justice. Violent crime against journalists is not isolated. On Wednesday afternoon, Bangladesher Alo reporter Anwar Hossain Saurav was dragged, beaten and stomped on with bricks near Gazipur Sadar police station. A video of the assault went viral on Facebook. Police have arrested the prime suspect in that case. The same night, the body of a decorator businessman was recovered in Bhabanipur area Gazipur Sadar upazila. His son said miscreants dumped the body after killing him. Law enforcement agencies claim they are on high alert. RAB-1 chief Lt Col Ashiqur Rahman said multiple teams are working to catch those behind Tuhin’s murder, with operations, check-posts and patrols continuing.
Gazipur SP Dr Chowdhury Md Zaber Sadeq said no case in the district has gone unsolved since his posting, and that the crime situation is “better than before.”  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
