Death row fugitive arrested by anti-terrorism unit
  Bangla Press Desk:  The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) has arrested a fugitive death row convict who escaped from Kashimpur High Security Prison last year. Acting on a tip-off, an operational team of the ATU conducted a raid in Tejturi Bazar under Tejgaon Police Station in Dhaka at around 7:00pm on Thursday. During the operation, they arrested 23-year-old Sakib alias Babu, son of Mojibur Madbar of Momin Ali Farazi Kandi village of Zajira upazila in Shariatpur district. According to ATU, Sakib and his accomplices abducted eighth-grade student Shakil Madbar (15) on 25 June 2020 from East Naodoba village in Zajira, demanding ransom from his family. When the ransom was not paid, they killed the boy and buried his body beside an under-construction railway bridge to conceal the crime.
A case was filed with Zajira Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Penal Code. After trial, the court sentenced Sakib to death, and he was confined in Kashimpur High Security Prison as condemned prisoner No. 5333/A. On 6 August 2024, taking advantage of the turmoil following the government’s fall during the anti-discrimination student movement, Sakib escaped from Kashimpur prison and went into hiding. The prison authorities subsequently filed a case with Konabari Police Station under multiple sections of the Penal Code. Since then, Sakib had been evading arrest while moving across Dhaka and other parts of the country. ATU said that using intelligence surveillance and acting on a requisition from Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s Konabari Police Station, their specialised team successfully tracked and arrested the fugitive.
The arrested convict has since been handed over to Konabari Police Station for further legal action.  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
