Election Commission to Hold Mock Voting Before Local Polls
Bangla Press Desk: The Election Commission (EC) is planning to conduct mock voting before holding local government elections.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed shared the information with journalists at his office at the EC headquarters in Agargaon in the capital on Sunday.
He said the commission has already prepared five key components required for conducting the mock polls, including a voters’ list, polling centres and election materials.
Regarding preparations for the local government polls, Akhtar said the commission would complete the training of trainers in phases once the election schedule is announced. Initially, master trainers would be trained, who would subsequently train polling officials at different levels, he added.
He said mock voting would be conducted to ensure that the elections are smoother and more meaningful this time.
Meanwhile, the EC has published the draft code of conduct for elections to the five tiers of local government institutions on its website on 10 June, seeking opinions from political parties and other stakeholders.
Regarding the draft code, the senior secretary said the commission had already received feedback from several quarters and work on finalising the guidelines was ongoing.
In another development, the EC has requested Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station to evict illegal computer and photocopy shops operating in front of and around its headquarters in Agargaon, in a bid to prevent irregularities related to National Identity Card (NID) services.
According to a working paper prepared for the commission’s monthly coordination meeting in June, eviction drives have already been conducted.
EC officials said the letters were sent to ensure that such illegal businesses could no longer operate around the commission’s headquarters. Source: daily Sun
