Election to be held in February: CA Yunus
  Bangla Press Desk: Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has said that the next general election will be held before Ramadan next year, presumably in February 2026. CA Yunus made the announcement in a video address to the nation on Tuesday. Earlier, CA Yunus unveiled the July Declaration at the South Plaza of National Parliament Building in the afternoon. Dr Yunus said, “Now it is time for us to fulfill our final duty - the holding of the national election. From this moment, after delivering this address on this historic day, we are entering the final and most important chapter of our responsibility. We are beginning the process of handing over power to an elected government.”
He added, “On behalf of the interim government, I will send a formal letter to the chief election commissioner (CEC), urging the Election Commission (EC) to hold the national election in February 2026, ahead of Ramadan.” The Chief Adviser called upon the public for prayers and support, saying, “Please pray that the election is held successfully, allowing every citizen of this country to move forward in building a ‘New Bangladesh.’ The government will extend full cooperation to ensure that the election is fair, peaceful, and festive.” He concluded by emphasising the government's commitment to creating a historic and memorable election. “From tomorrow, we will begin both psychological and institutional preparations so that this election stands out in our history - for its joyous spirit, peaceful environment, high voter turnout, and atmosphere of goodwill and sincerity,” Yunus also said.
During his speech, CA Yunus pledged that the nation will not allow a repeat of any dark or shameful chapter in its history, while warning against efforts to derail the upcoming national election. Yunus said, “As you all know, there is a faction eagerly trying to disrupt the election process. They are engaged in various subversive activities, both from within the country and abroad, to undermine our democratic progress.” Focusing on the need for vigilance, Yunus said, “We must ensure that they are not given any opportunity to turn the election into a conflict. Remember, defeated forces will repeatedly attempt to reassert themselves until the election. But if we can successfully hold a free, fair, and impartial election, it will mark their ultimate defeat.” Highlighting the government's commitment to public engagement and transparency, Dr Yunus announced the launch of a new digital initiative.
“We are developing a mobile app to gather continuous feedback regarding the election. It will be launched soon, and through it, citizens will be able to share their suggestions, opinions, concerns, and initiatives directly with us,” he said.
