Emi, two others denied bail in Anti-Terrorism case

Bangla Press Desk:   A Dhaka court on Monday denied bail to Sk Tasnim Afroz Emi, former vice president of Shamsunnahar Hall Union at Dhaka University and a vice-presidential candidate in the last DUCSU election, and two others in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The other two accused are former leader of the banned Dhaka University Chhatra League’s Shahidullah Hall unit Md Asif Ahmed Shoikat and Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall Chhatra League leader Abdul Al Mamun.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after three different lawyers pleaded for their bail.

According to court sources, Advocate Monir Hossain appeared in the hearing seeking bail on behalf of Emi, while Advocate Tariqul Islam appeared for Shoikat and Golam Rabbani for Abdullah Al Mamun.

According to the case statement, several members of the banned Awami League, Jubo League, and banned Chhatra League gathered at the Shaheedullah Hall crossing under Shahbagh Police Station, playing the historic 7 March speech through a loudspeaker at around 3:00 pm on Saturday.

When police arrived at the scene after receiving information, they attempted to flee, but police detained Asif Ahmed Shoikat at that time with the help of locals.

Later the same day, around 9:30 pm, it was alleged that another group of 10 to 15 unidentified individuals gathered in front of Gate No. 1 of the National Museum under the leadership of Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi and Abdul Al Mamun.

They allegedly chanted provocative slogans through loudspeakers and attempted to reactivate the activities of a banned organisation as part of an anti-government conspiracy.

According to police, the accused also obstructed police in carrying out their duties and attempted to snatch away Asif Ahmed Shoikat, who was in police custody.

Later, a group of students led by DUCSU leaders AB Zubair and Mohammad Mosaddek detained Abdul Al Mamun and Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi and handed them over to the police.

Police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Shahbagh Police Station on Sunday, with the police acting as the complainant following the incident. Source: daily Sun
