Bangla Press Desk: Former Army chief Lt Gen (Retd) M Harun-ur-Rashid, Bir Protik, was found dead in the guest house of the Chittagong Club on Monday afternoon.
According to sources, Harun, 77, arrived in Chattogram from Dhaka on Sunday afternoon and checked into VIP Room No. 308 at approximately 4pm. He briefly left the club, returning around 10:45pm. Harun was due to appear in a Chattogram court the following morning. When he did not emerge by 10am Monday, staff at the club grew concerned. Club officials and employees accessed his room via an emergency exit and discovered him lying on the bed.
Commander (Retd) Md Ashraf Uddin, secretary of Chattogram Club Limited, said, “Army officials alerted us after they could not reach him by phone. We then entered through the emergency backdoor and found the body on the bed.”
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Md Alamgir Hossain told the Daily Sun that initial observations suggested no visible injuries; the former general may have died of natural causes or health complications. Harun served as Chief of Army Staff from December 2000 to June 2002. In 2006, he became president of Destiny Group, a corporate entity mired in controversy, and remained in that role until his death.
