Fakhrul calls for politics-free sports to ensure talent thrives at all levels

Bangla Press Desk:   Following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s remarks, Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for Bangladesh’s sports arenas to remain free from politics.

Addressing sports organisers and players on Tuesday, Fakhrul urged them to “step away from political influence” in the sporting arena.

“We have always believed that politics should have no place here. It is most painful when talented athletes are left out of a club or national team because of political reasons,” he said while visiting Motijheel’s Mohammedan Sporting Club.

Speaking directly to State Minister for Sports Md Aminul Haque—a former national football team captain and accomplished player—Fakhrul said: “Our young sports minister has represented the nation with great skill and distinction. I request that, keeping this in mind, he helps maintain a politics-free sports environment. If we can achieve this, we will surely succeed.”

He added that the premier shared the same vision.

During Monday’s event distributing sports cards and allowances to athletes, Tarique said: “Dear athletes, I urge you sincerely: you are not, and should not be, representatives of any political party.

“Represent your country through skill and professionalism. Bring honour and glory to Bangladesh in the world of sports.”

Fakhrul highlighted Tarique’s efforts to promote sports at the grassroots level and to professionalise the field so athletes can pursue sports as a career.

“Providing allowances and recognition is good, but the larger goal is enabling future athletes to take sports professionally. This will bring fresh thinking to Bangladesh’s sporting landscape,” he said.

Expressing personal passion, Fakhrul said: “We carry sports in our hearts. I still go to watch matches whenever I can. Football between Abahani and Mohammedan remains our lifelong passion.”

He praised Mohammedan Sporting Club’s 90-year history and expressed pride as a supporter.
