FDNY Commissioner resigns over Mamdani Clash
Staff Reporter: Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) Commissioner Robert S. Tucker has announced his resignation, citing ideological differences with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. He also criticized recent protest responses, noting his concerns regarding a lack of support for emergency personnel. His resignation, effective Dec. 19, has drawn criticism from some Jewish leaders and first responders. Tucker noted he received no personal outreach from Mamdani or his team regarding the department’s transition. Tucker cited his faith as a key factor in his resignation.
Tucker stated, “But ideologically, there’s no doubt that the mayor(-elect) and I disagree on some very fundamental things to me.” Tucker added, “I believe that the things that I have heard the mayor say would make it difficult for me to continue on in such a senior executive role in the administration.”
Resignation Over Ideological Rift
Tucker then criticized Mamdani for a slow response to a pro-Palestinian protest that threatened Jewish New Yorkers and blocked a synagogue entrance. Mamdani’s team said he discouraged the protesters’ language and clarified his comments referred to the host’s promotion of West Bank settlements. Tucker stated, “You know, I don’t know that the public has heard appropriately from him.” He added, “I haven’t had any personal conversations with the mayor-elect. I haven’t heard from anyone in his incoming administration, nor has the department.”
Tucker said, “And so I only hope that is not an indicator of their feelings about the FDNY. I’d like to think they think everything is going so well here that they don’t need to transition so fast.”
