Five arrested, arms-ammo seized as police uncover Rakib murder mystery
Bangla Press Desk: Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the murder of Rakibul Islam near the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital and recovered the firearm and ammunition used in the killing.
The arrests were made jointly by Shahbagh Police Station and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.The arrested suspects have been identified as Golam Rasul Shihab, 21; Rafin Sheikh, 20; Shahariar Nazim Joy, 20; Sagar Fakir, 26; and Salahuddin Sagar, also known as Saka, 38.
According to Shahbagh police, the incident took place around 8:30pm on Sunday (15 March) on the western side of the Central Shaheed Minar. Rakibul Islam was attacked shortly after parking his motorcycle when a group of five to six unidentified youths assaulted him.
The attackers allegedly shot him multiple times from behind using a pistol. After he fell to the ground seriously injured, the assailants stabbed him indiscriminately in the chest, back, and other parts of his body with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.Rakibul was later taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital by local passers-by, where doctors declared him dead. A murder case was subsequently filed at Shahbagh Police Station.
Police said Golam Rasul Shihab was arrested on the night of the incident with assistance from people at the scene. Based on his information, further drives were carried out. Rafin Sheikh was arrested in the Labanchara area of Khulna on Monday (16 March) at around 2:00pm, while Shahariar Nazim Joy was detained later the same day around 7:00pm from Ward No. 31 under the jurisdiction of the same police station.
On Tuesday (17 March) at about 12:10pm, Sagar Fakir was arrested during another raid in the Mirzaganj area of Patuakhali district.
According to CTTC officials, acting on intelligence information, a CTTC team conducted a raid in the Kashiani area of Gopalganj district early Wednesday at around 3:00am and arrested Salahuddin Sagar alias Saka. A pistol and four rounds of ammunition used in the murder were recovered from his possession during the operation.
Police described Salahuddin Sagar as a top criminal figure and alleged leader of a hired criminal network based in Khulna. Authorities say several contract killers operated under his leadership.
Law enforcement agencies said legal action against the arrested individuals is underway and efforts are continuing to apprehend others involved in the murder.Source: daily Sun
