Noman Sabit: Former Milwaukee, Wisconsin judge Hannah Dugan has been convicted for helping an undocumented immigrant evade arrest in the United States. A federal judge has ordered that her sentence will be announced on June 3.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman said Dugan will be sentenced at a federal courthouse in Milwaukee. Adelman, an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, noted that a federal jury found Dugan guilty in December on an obstruction charge. According to the case, Dugan helped an undocumented immigrant exit through a back door after realizing federal immigration officers were present to arrest him in her courtroom.

Days before scheduling the sentencing, Judge Adelman denied Dugan’s request for a new trial and acquittal. She faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, though she is unlikely to receive the maximum due to having no prior criminal record.

Following her conviction, Dugan resigned from her judicial position earlier this year. She had already been suspended shortly after her arrest in April 2025. Her attorneys have announced plans to appeal the verdict to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

The case stems from an incident last April, when Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, an undocumented immigrant, appeared in Dugan’s courtroom. When federal immigration officers arrived to arrest him, Dugan allegedly helped him and his lawyer leave through a side door. Flores-Ruiz was arrested shortly after leaving the courthouse, and Dugan was arrested about a week later.

The U.S. Department of Justice described the case as a high-profile example of accountability. FBI Director Kash Patel stated at the time, “No one is above the law.”
