Gopalganj mayhem: 5,400 sued in four murder cases
Bangla Press Desk:  Four murder cases have been filed against 5,400 unnamed individuals in connection with the deadly violence during a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj that left five people dead. On Saturday night, four sub-inspectors of Sadar police station lodged the cases under sections 147, 148, 149, 186, 153, 307, 302, and 34 of the Penal Code, said Inspector (Investigation) Abdullah Al Mamun. Earlier, law enforcers filed four lawsuits against more than 3,000 individuals with Sadar, Kashiani, and Kotalipara police stations over vandalism, arson, and attacks on police personnel during the NCP rally. Among the accused are members and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.  So far, 321 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, according to the police.
On 16 July, four people were killed and dozens injured in a series of clashes between supporters of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies and law enforcers over the NCP’s scheduled rally in the district. Another individual succumbed to his injuries on 18 July while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The district administration on 16 July imposed Section 144 to bring the situation under control, and subsequently, a curfew was imposed, which was extended in phases.
