Govt forms body to prove BFIU chief’s viral videos
  Bangla Press Desk: The government has formed a four-member probe body to investigate a compromising video reportedly involving AFM Shahinul Islam, chief of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU). The Financial Institutions Division under the Ministry of Finance took the action on Wednesday in response to a call from Bangladesh Bank, after the video went viral on social media. The committee has been formed, headed by an Additional Secretary of the Ministry and it has been asked to investigate the authenticity of the video and submit its report to the authorities concerned within seven working days. Earlier on Tuesday, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) launched a probe over the viral online videos that show the central bank’s anti-money laundering unit chief in “an inappropriate situation.”
The IT sector of the central bank was checking the authenticity of the videos of AFM Shahinul Islam, chief of BFIU. The videos went viral across social media on Monday and the videos first surfaced on WhatsApp and Messenger. It is worth noting that BB Governor Ahsan H Mansur did not recommend Shahinul’s appointment in the search committee. The Finance Ministry appointed him anyway in January amid widespread controversy. The post remained vacant since the ouster of former chief Masud Biswas in a major changeover on 8 August last year.
Shahinul Islam was appointed on 9 January, and the probe committee was formed against him seven and a half months after his appointment. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
