Govt increases house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers
Bangla Press Desk: The government has announced an increase in house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and employees of private educational institutions in response to their sustained movement demanding better financial benefits.
The Finance Division issued an official notification on Sunday, signed by Deputy Secretary Mitu Maryam.
According to the circular, the government has approved the increase in house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and staff. Under the new provision, they will receive 5 per cent of their basic salary as house rent, with a minimum of Tk2,000, subject to several conditions.
The order further states that the revised allowance must be adjusted with the next national pay scale. It also mandates compliance with existing MPO-related policies, including the 2021 MPO policy for schools and colleges, the 2018 (revised 2020) MPO policy for madrasas, and the 2018 (revised 2020) MPO policy for vocational, business management, agriculture and fisheries diploma institutions.
The notification specifies that no arrears will be payable, and all financial regulations must be strictly followed. Any future irregularities in the disbursement process will make the bill-paying authorities liable. The directive will come into effect from 1 November 2025.
Teachers had been demonstrating for several days, demanding a rise in house rent allowance. On Saturday, they staged a hunger strike and black flag procession. They had also announced a “hungry march” towards the Education Building at noon on Sunday. The government’s decision came just hours before the planned protest.
