Heavy rush at Kamalapur on first day of Eid holidays, trains depart on time
Bangla Press Desk: A seven-day holiday marking Eid ul-Fitr began on Tuesday (17 March), triggering a surge of homebound passengers at Kamalapur Railway Station.
Despite the heavy rush, travellers said most trains departed on schedule. From early morning, northern-bound trains witnessed significant passenger pressure, with commuters scrambling to secure seats as soon as trains arrived at the platforms. Morning services were packed to capacity, leaving little or no standing space in many carriages. Numerous passengers were also seen travelling on train roofs.
In contrast, trains heading to the eastern region were comparatively less crowded, offering some relief to passengers.
Railway officials said all trains departed on time from Kamalapur on Tuesday, except the Nil Sagar Express, which experienced a delay. The absence of major schedule disruptions brought relief and satisfaction among travellers.
A passenger travelling to Rangpur said he encountered thousands of people at the station but remained optimistic about boarding a train to celebrate Eid with his family.
A government employee said he had already sent his wife and children home earlier and was now travelling alone. He expressed concern about boarding amid the crowd but noted that trains were leaving on time.
Station Master Anwar Hossain said all tickets were sold online this year, while standing tickets are now being issued, allowing 25 additional passengers per 100 seats. He added that trains may occasionally face minor delays due to stoppages at intermediate stations and cleaning work, but efforts are underway to maintain schedules and ensure better services for passengers.
