Imranur reclaims fastest man of Bangladesh title
Bangla Press Desk: Imranur Rahman has reclaimed his crown as Bangladesh’s fastest man, winning the 100m sprint at the National Summer Athletics Competition today. This marks the fifth time the UK-based sprinter has clinched the title in the country’s premier sprint event. The England-based athlete had missed the national championships held in February, where Ismail had been crowned Bangladesh’s fastest man. At today’s Summer Athletics meet, Imranur returned not only to compete but also to reclaim the prestigious title. Representing the Bangladesh Navy, he crossed the finish line in 10.64 seconds. Expressing his joy, Imranur said, “I thank the Navy. I was out for 6–7 months due to injury. I also had an operation. After going through a difficult time, it feels great to be first again.” While his timing of 10.64 seconds is enough to secure the national title, it falls short of international standards. On this, Imranur added, “It’s okay for now, because I was out of training for 2–3 months. I want to perform well in the upcoming South Asian Games.”
Six months ago, the former fastest man Ismail finished third this time with 10.88 seconds, while the second place went to the Army’s Motaleb, clocking 10.86 seconds. A true flagbearer for Bangladesh in track and field, Imranur has consistently been one of the nation’s standout athletes in recent years. He previously held the country’s fastest man title for three consecutive years, set a national 100m record, and made history at the 2023 Asian Indoor Championships by winning gold in the 60m sprint. He also recorded an impressive 10.11 seconds in London, setting another national record. However, his career faced a major setback last year when an injury forced him to withdraw from the Paris Olympics, keeping him sidelined for seven to eight months. He even underwent surgery for an abdominal muscle issue, preventing participation in multiple domestic and international meets. Now fully recovered, the 32-year-old sprinter has made a triumphant return to the track. His victory at the National Summer Meet not only restores his status as Bangladesh’s fastest man but also rekindles hopes for more international success in the near future.
