Indian envoy meets PM, energy security discussed

Bangla Press Desk:    Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Verma Monday paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Cabinet Division office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, discussing bilateral affairs with focus on energy cooperation.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting was over, Prime Minister's foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir said the present government is keen to forge a new chapter in relations with India, departing from the framework established during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's tenure.

"The meeting emphasised energy security, with special focus on diesel import through pipelines from India," Kabir said.

"Maintaining positive relations between the two countries makes it possible to resolve many issues. We are optimistic about moving forward with the process of importing energy via pipeline."

The discussions signal both governments' intent to strengthen cooperation in energy supply, infrastructure, and other sectors of strategic importance, amid ongoing efforts to stabilise Bangladesh's energy landscape.

Bangladesh, as also other countries, is currently on the lookout for fuels to meet the exigencies being created by the US-Israel attacks on Iran and retaliation that have disrupted supply chains from the energy hubs in the Gulf.

UNB adds: European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday.

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister's Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, where Miller led an EU delegation, said a PMO release.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister and the EU Ambassador discussed issues of mutual interest, including strengthening bilateral relations.

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir were present at the meeting.
