Inqilab March to besiege Secretariat on 3 Aug demanding ‘July Declaration’
Bangla Press Desk: The Inqilab Manch, a group representing July uprising participants, on Tuesday threatened to besiege the Secretariat on 3 August if the “July Declaration” will not be announced by then. The group would lead a “July Coffin March” to the Secretariat before besieging it, its Spokesman Sharif Osman Hadi said during a procession, staged to demand the declaration this month. Demonstrations would continue throughout this month to press home the demand, Osman Hadi said before wrapping up the procession on Tuesday afternoon. July Declaration is an official announcement of the role played by the uprising participants in freeing the country from the clutches of Awami League autocracy in July-August last year, after more than 15 years. The announcement by the interim government is expected to be a “binding obligation” for the upcoming elected government to recognise the uprising participants constitutionally through amendment.
Tuesday’s procession titled “People’s Red March” was planned to reach the Foreign Service Academy at Bailey Road from Shahbagh intersection. At 5pm, however, police intercepted the Inqilab Manch members at Kakrail intersection, prompting them to instead stage a sit-in on the spot. The sit-in continued until 6pm, when the demonstration was ended. The group’s Osman Hadi blamed the government’s lack of commitment, and unwillingness among political parties for the failure to issue the declaration within the stipulated time. “The government claims to uphold the spirit of the July uprising, but has little concerns for the families of uprising martyrs and the injured participants,” he alleged.
Nonetheless, the Inqilab Manch will not rest until the declaration is issued, he warned. This article was originally published on Daily Sun. [Bangla Press is a global platform for free thought.
