Bangla Press Desk: Authorities at Dhaka Medical College Hospital have formed a six-member probe committee following a clash between Dhaka University students and intern doctors, while announcing the resumption of emergency medical services.
Hospital Director Brig Gen Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the development after a late-night meeting on Wednesday, stating that the committee has been asked to submit its report by 11 July.
The incident reportedly began when a Dhaka University student sought treatment at the hospital’s emergency department. A doctor advised the purchase of an injection—unavailable at the hospital—from outside. When the student’s companions failed to find the medicine, an argument ensued upon their return, which later escalated into a physical altercation.
The situation quickly intensified, prompting authorities to shut the main emergency entrance, known as the “Kechi Gate”, and temporarily suspend services. Tensions spread across the hospital, with students gathering outside and intern doctors taking positions inside.
Dr Mostak Ahmed, a resident physician at the emergency department, said the prescribed injection was of a controlled category, which may have made it difficult to obtain. He also alleged that some students attempted to force entry into the emergency unit, raising concerns over doctors’ safety.
The hospital director said the probe committee—headed by a dean from Dhaka University—includes representatives from the hospital, university administration and law enforcement. Further action will be taken based on its findings.
He added that steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted medical services during the investigation, stressing the need to guarantee doctors’ safety while maintaining a cooperative relationship between patients and healthcare providers. Source: daily Sun
