July Charter sets 10-year limit for Prime Minister’s tenure
Bangla Press Desk: The historic July National Charter-2025 was signed by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and leaders of 25 political parties on Friday at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Under the widely discussed charter, no individual in Bangladesh can hold the office of Prime Minister for more than 10 years. The document also notes that relevant amendments will be made to the Constitution to implement this provision.
Meanwhile, a total of 33 political parties, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, have expressed agreement with the 10-year tenure limit.
The signing of the charter commemorates the sacrifices and bloodshed of the people during the July–August 2024 mass uprising and is considered a new document of political consensus.
However, the National Citizens Party (NCP) and four other leftist parties did not participate in the signing of the historic July National Charter-2025. This article was originally published on the Daily Sun.
