July Martyrs’ Day: Bangladesh to observe state mourning on 16 July
Bangla Press Desk: The interim government has decided to observe state mourning on 16 July (Wednesday), marking “July Martyrs’ Day”. This decision was announced in a notification signed by Cabinet Division Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid on Tuesday. On the occasion, the national flag will be hoisted at half-mast on all government, semi-government, autonomous, and private institutions and educational establishments as well as Bangladesh missions abroad. Besides, special prayers will be offered at all the mosques across the country and other worship places, seeking eternal peace for the departed souls.
In June, the interim government declared 16 July as “July Martyrs’ Day” commemorating the death of Abu Sayeed who was killed on the day in police firing in Rangpur during the quota reform movement. Besides, 5 August was also declared “July Mass Uprising Day” to commemorate the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government amid the student-people mass uprising.
