Man on 5-day remand over killing and dismembering roommate’s body

Bangla Press Desk:  A Dhaka court on Monday placed accused Shaheen Alam on a five-day remand in a case filed over the killing and dismemberment of his roommate, Mohammad Obaidullah, into seven pieces.

The court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain passed the order after police produced him before the court seeking a seven-day remand.During the hearing, the judge asked the accused why he killed the victim in such a brutal manner. The accused initially remained silent and later told the court that there was no prior plan to kill him.

When asked about the dispute with the victim and how he transported the dismembered body parts to different locations, the accused said his mother was ill and that the victim had some advance money belonging to him. He also claimed there had been ongoing conflicts due to the victim’s behaviour.

Responding to another question from the court, the accused said he had been living in Dhaka for about four and a half months. However, no lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearing.

According to the case statement, the victim, Obaidullah, worked as a sales representative and lived in a mess in the Motijheel area along with Shaheen Alam. They had disagreements over various issues and often argued. On 27 February at 9:43 pm, Obaidullah last spoke with his younger brother, Jalil, over the phone.

The next day, around 12:30 pm, dismembered body parts wrapped in black polythene were recovered from different locations in Dhaka. Police later identified the body parts as Obaidullah through fingerprint verification.

Police later visited the mess after tracing the address and recovered a blood-stained machete and reviewed CCTV footage. At one stage, police interrogated Shaheen, during which he admitted to killing Obaidullah, dismembering the body, and dumping the parts in different places to conceal the crime.

Obaidullah’s father, Hamid Mia, filed a murder case at Motijheel Police Station, alleging that Shaheen brutally hacked his son to death between 9:43 pm and 1:52 am on 27 February and dismembered the body to dispose of it.Source: daily Sun
