Man to die for killing caretaker over Tk5

Bangla Press Desk:   A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced a man, Md Kajol, to death in a case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital for killing a caretaker over just Tk5.

Dhaka’s 11th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Md Nurul Islam, delivered the verdict. In addition to the death sentence, the court also fined the convict Tk10,000.The convict was produced before the court from prison during the day and later sent back to jail with a conviction warrant after the pronouncement of the sentence. He has been in jail custody since 25 March 2018.

According to court sources, the convict Kajol hails from Jaria village under Purbadhala Police Station in Netrokona district.

According to the case statement, Julhas Mia from Darichar village under Homna Police Station in Cumilla district had been working as a caretaker for about 30 years at a house located on Indira Road, Farmgate, under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

On 20 March 2018, at around 6:45 pm, he went in front of a cement shop adjacent to the house. At that time, the accused Kajol asked the caretaker Julhas for Tk5. As Julhas delayed in giving the money, Kajol stabbed him forcefully above the navel with a sharp knife he was carrying.

The victim was critically injured and collapsed on the road. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Following the incident, the victim’s son, Md Saiful, filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The next day, the accused Kajol gave a confessional statement before the court.

On 9 June of the same year, police submitted the charge sheet to the court after completing the investigation.

On 30 September 2018, charges were formally framed against the accused, and the trial began. During the trial, the court recorded the testimonies of 11 out of 15 witnesses.
