Mobile phone sellers call countrywide shutdown
Bangla Press Desk: Business Community Bangladesh (MCB) has announced that all mobile phone sales outlets across the country will remain closed .
The declaration was made at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Wednesday.
Speakers at the briefing warned that if the association’s secretary, Pias, is not released by Wednesday, they will launch a nationwide protest. They also threatened to “bring the country to a standstill”.
They said all mobile phone shops across Bangladesh will remain shut in protest against the detention of SumashTech CEO Abu Sayeed Pias by the Detective Branch (DB).
“If secretary Pias is not freed within today, we will take to the streets with tougher programmes,” they warned.
According to allegations raised on Tuesday night, DB personnel picked up Pias, who is also a smartphone and gadget businessman.
Pias’s wife, Sumaiya Chowdhury, claimed that DB officers took her husband from their Mirpur-1 residence at around 3:00am and also seized his mobile phone.
