Minara Helen: Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Wednesday celebrated the suspension of more than 100 students at Mustang Public Schools who walked out of class to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“I applaud Mustang Superintendent Dr. Charles Bradley for suspending 122 students who walked out of class to protest,” the governor wrote on social platform X. “Young Oklahomans: Free speech is sacred, but truancy robs your future. Stay in school, build skills, and make your voice heard responsibly.” The school district said it told students they were expected to stay in class after discovering plans for a classroom walkout, according to a statement received by NewsNation, the sister-station of The Hill.

Mustang Public Schools said students who chose to ignore the warning and participate in the walkout got in-school suspension for unexcused absences. Classes went on as normal for students who did not participate.

“Despite social media claims alleging adult involvement, district leadership reviewed all allegations and found no evidence that any Mustang Public Schools employee instigated, organized, or facilitated this student activity. Individuals identified in online posts as district employees were either not affiliated with Mustang Public Schools or were inaccurately represented,” the statement reads.

The Hill has reached out to the district for comment. Anti-ICE classroom walkouts have popped up around the country after two protesters were killed by federal immigration authorities in Minneapolis.

Due to the disruptive nature of a classroom walkout, experts say it is not one of the forms of protests protected for students by the First Amendment.

The protests are putting schools under a spotlight with Texas and Florida threatening consequences for K-12 districts they suspect of encouraging students’ actions.
