Nationwide accidents kill 577, injure 900 in November
Bangla Press Desk: In November, a total of 577 accidents occurred across the country on roads, railways and waterways, leaving 553 people dead and 900 injured.
Road accidents alone caused 507 deaths in 526 incidents, while 899 people were injured.
Railway accidents killed 40 people and injured one in 44 incidents.
On waterways, seven accidents left six dead and four are still missing.
The information comes from the media monitoring report of the Accident Monitoring Cell of Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association on Monday, signed by Secretary General Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.
Motorcycle accidents were particularly high, with 195 incidents resulting in 201 deaths and 171 injuries.
This represented 38.69% of all accidents, 41.10% of deaths and 20.82% of injuries.
By division, Dhaka recorded the most road accidents with 155 incidents, 132 deaths and 257 injuries, while Sylhet had the lowest with 19 incidents, 21 deaths and 89 injuries.
Among the victims were four police officers, one RAB member, one army personnel, five doctors, one journalist, 109 drivers, 93 pedestrians, 71 women, 50 children, 43 students, 18 transport workers, 12 teachers and six political leaders.
A total of 746 vehicles were involved, with 31.23% motorcycles, 20.24% trucks, pickups, covered vans and lorries, 13% buses, 13.13% battery-operated rickshaws and e-bikes, 7.10% CNG-run auto-rickshaws, 9.11% small commercial vehicles and 6.16% cars, jeeps and microbuses.
Accident types were- 48.66% vehicle run-overs, 25.47% head-on collisions, 18.53% loss of control, 5.89% other causes, 0.57% scarf entanglements and 0.76% train-vehicle collisions.
By road type, 38.02% occurred on national highways, 24.71% on regional highways, 30.22% on feeder roads, 5.13% in Dhaka, 0.76% in Chattogram and 0.76% at railway crossings.
