NCP candidate forfeits deposit in Chattogram-8
Bangla Press Desk: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 14 of the 16 parliamentary seats in Chattogram district in the 13th national election, according to official results.
In Chattogram-8 (Boalkhali-Chandgaon), National Citizens’ Party (NCP) candidate Zobairul Hasan Arif suffered a heavy defeat. He secured only 2,906 votes out of 554,729 registered voters, accounting for just 0.52 percent of the electorate.
BNP candidate Ershad Ullah won the seat with 150,737 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Abu Naser, received 52,033 votes.
Chattogram Returning Officer and Divisional Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ziauddin and Boalkhali Assistant Returning Officer Mehdi Hasan Faruk announced that 256,134 voters cast ballots in the constituency.
According to the Election Commission’s guidelines, a candidate must secure at least one-eighth of the total votes cast in the constituency to retain the security deposit. In Chattogram-8, a candidate needed more than 20,490 votes to avoid forfeiture. Arif failed to meet the threshold, resulting in the loss of his deposit.
Two other candidates in the constituency also lost their deposits. Islami Andolan candidate Mohammad Nurul Alam secured 1,188 votes, while Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh candidate Mohammad Emdadul Haque received 870 votes.
Across the district, BNP candidates won in 14 constituencies, while Jamaat-e-Islami candidates secured the remaining two seats.
The BNP winners include Nurul Amin in Chattogram-1 (Mirsarai), Sarwar Alamgir in Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari), Mostafa Kamal Pasha in Chattogram-3 (Sandwip), Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury in Chattogram-4 (Sitakunda), Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin in Chattogram-5 (Hathazari), Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury in Chattogram-6 (Raozan), Hummam Quader Chowdhury in Chattogram-7, Ershad Ullah in Chattogram-8, Mohammad Abu Sufian in Chattogram-9 (Kotwali-Bakalia), Sayeed Al Noman in Chattogram-10 (Double Mooring-Pahartali), Amir Khasru Mahmud in Chattogram-11 (Bandar-Patenga), Md Enamul Haque in Chattogram-12 (Patiya), Sarwar Jamal Nizam in Chattogram-13 (Anwara-Karnaphuli) and Jasim Uddin Ahmed in Chattogram-14 (Chandanaish-Satkania partial).
Jamaat-e-Islami candidates Shahjahan Chowdhury won Chattogram-15 (Satkania-Lohagara), while Zahirul Islam secured victory in Chattogram-16 (Banshkhali).
