Ema Alice: Police have arrested a New York resident Bangladeshi man, Naymat Ulla, for allegedly scamming thousands of dollars from an 83-year-old woman. According to court documents, new details have emerged about the fraud scheme that led to the arrest of the New York man in Upshur County, West Virginia.
According to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, the victim an 83-year-old woman — was targeted after Ulla placed a virus on her computer, allowing him to remotely access her bank account. Investigators say the woman may have had a mental acuity decline, according to court documents.
Court documents show Ulla altered a $20 payment from the victim to $20,000. He then convinced her she was in legal trouble and instructed her to wrap $18,000 in cash in aluminum foil for pickup at her home.
The following day, Ulla attempted to withdraw an additional $20,000 from the woman’s account. Bank personnel recognized the suspicious activity and contacted the Sheriff’s Office setting up the sting operation that led to Ulla’s arrest. During the sting, Ulla directed the victim to pack $20,000 in foil inside a paper bag, wrap it in duct tape, and send a photo of the package. A courier later told the victim he would come to pick up the money.
Deputies spotted a white Toyota sedan stopped in the roadway on Mountain Ridge Road. Deputies detained Ulla when he went to the victim’s residence for the money. After searching his vehicle, investigators found $130,000 in cash in a shoe box. In a press release via the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, police have arrested Naymat Ulla of Buffalo, New York. Friday, February 20, deputies notified the state attorney general’s office of a fraud investigation at a local bank. After establishing a telephone contact with the scammer a money pickup was arranged for 9:00 AM Saturday morning.
Ulla arrived at the pickup location and was taken into custody without incident. A search of his vehicle led deputies to find over $130,000 in cash, gold coins, and electronic devices.
Ulla was transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail to await arraignment. He is charged with multiple felonies.
