Next Parliament will determine caretaker govt structure: Attorney General
Bangla Press Desk: Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman said on Thursday that while the non-partisan caretaker government system has been reinstated, its final structure—whether based on the previous model or the July charter—will be determined by the next parliament.
He said, “With the reinstatement of the caretaker government system, people will again be able to cast their own votes, voting will take place during the day instead of at night, and dead people will not be able to vote. The country has started walking on the highway of democracy.”
The Attorney General further said that former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque had “dug the grave of democracy” by abolishing the caretaker government system.
A seven-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the verdict on Thursday restoring the caretaker government system. However, it will be implemented from the 14th parliamentary election.
In the short order, the court said that all related appeals and civil review petitions were unanimously granted. It also described the previous verdict delivered by the Appellate Division under former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque as flawed and tarnished, and therefore completely overturned it.
