Party activist hands Tk10 lakh cheque to BNP leader at rally

Bangla Press Desk: A campaign rally announced in support of the BNP’s 31-point reform agenda and its electoral symbol, the paddy sheaf, turned into a show of support for local BNP leader and nomination aspirant Kamruzzaman Kamrul.

The event took place at Sachna Bazar in Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj on Saturday afternoon.

During the rally, party activists welcomed Kamruzzaman with garlands made of flowers and currency notes. At one point, a party activist handed him a cheque worth Tk10 lakh, reportedly as a contribution for election expenses.

Although described as part of the BNP’s reform campaign, the gathering appeared largely focused on enhancing Kamruzzaman’s profile ahead of the upcoming national elections.

Kamruzzaman, a former joint general secretary of the Sunamganj district BNP and former chairman of Tahirpur Upazila Parishad, expressed gratitude to supporters.

“I had never met that party activist before. He handed me the cheque and told me to collect the money from the bank tomorrow (Sunday). I’m overwhelmed by such love and support from people,” Kamruzzaman said. He added, “I am campaigning for the paddy sheaf. I believe I will get the nomination if the people stand by me.”

The rally was presided over by Jamalganj Upazila BNP Joint General Secretary Masum Mahmud Talukder and attended by several BNP leaders, including Upazila Convening Committee members Md Shahinur Rahman, Julfikar Chowdhury, Fazlul Kader Chowdhury (Taufiq), Sajjad Mahmud Talukder, Tahirpur BNP Joint Convener Junab Ali, and Dharmapasha BNP Joint Convener Abdul Haque.

Local sources said multiple BNP leaders are seeking party nomination in the Sunamganj-1 constituency, which includes Tahirpur, Jamalganj, Dharmapasha, and Madhyanagar.

Other aspirants include Salma Nazir, wife of late former MP and district BNP president Nazir Hossain; former district BNP vice president and ex-Tahirpur chairman Anisul Haque; former central Jubo Dal assistant organising secretary Mahbubur Rahman; UK-based BNP leader Hamidul Haque Afindi; and former Dharmapasha upazila chairman and district BNP vice president Abdul Motaleb Khan.
