Patient dies after staffer removes oxygen mask due to 'low pay'
  Bangla Press Desk: A patient died at the Khulna Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning minutes after an outsourced cleaner removed the oxygen mask for supplying the life-saving gas to another patient. As the news went viral, the hospital authority formed a five-member probe committee on orders from Dr Md Abu Jafar, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Saiful Islam, 38, hailed from the Jogipol Union Parishad of Khulna district. He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday with kidney complications. In the evening, he started suffering from breathing issues, but it took past midnight for his family to arrange oxygen supply for him.
The family had to pay Abdul Jabbar, an outsourced worker, for the oxygen. However, in the morning, Abdul Jabbar detached the oxygen cylinder and mask from Saiful's bed, and took these away for another patient. Jabbar claimed he had to take the oxygen kits for a patient in "critical conditions." After the formation of probe committee, he reportedly changed his statement, and pinned the blame on Saiful's family members for detaching the oxygen supply. Saiful's relatives alleged Jabbar failed to get the pay he expected for arranging oxygen, and therefore cared little for the patient. The hospital's Director Dr Md Ainul Islam claimed Abdul Jabbar's contract had already expired. Furthermore, the hospital has an adequate supply of oxygen. There is no need to choose between patients to provide oxygen at the hospital.
A staffer also has no right to detach oxygen supply from a patient without consulting with the duty doctor first. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
