Bangla Press Desk: Australia's national carrier, Qantas Airways, cancelled a flight from Italy to Australia due to a bedbug infestation. The flight, scheduled to travel from Rome to Perth last Saturday, was called off, preventing passengers from reaching their destination on time.
A report by CNN affiliate Nine News stated that the decision to cancel the flight followed complaints from passengers on a previous flight who reported being bitten by bedbugs.
According to the report, economy-class passengers on flight QF5—traveling from Perth to Rome on October 9—raised these complaints. One passenger, Hayley Bagnall, told Nine News that the bedbugs were crawling over their personal belongings, clothing, and Qantas-provided blankets; they were even spotted near the windows.
In a statement to CNN on Tuesday, Qantas confirmed that the incident is under investigation. The Rome-to-Perth flight was cancelled to allow engineering and maintenance teams time for a thorough cleaning after issues were detected in several economy-class seats. The airline expressed sincere apologies to the passengers affected by the incident.
Qantas further stated that its aircraft cabins undergo regular, high-standard cleaning.
The airline added that accommodation was arranged for the passengers of the Saturday flight, and seats were secured for them on alternative flights.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bedbugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects. They typically bite and feed on blood while people are asleep and are found in various environments worldwide.
Bedbug bites can resemble mosquito bites, causing skin swelling and itching. Symptoms may be more severe in individuals allergic to bedbugs. Despite their name, bedbugs are not found exclusively in beds. They can spread from one place to another by hiding in luggage, travel bags, folded clothes, bed sheets, and the crevices of furniture.
The CDC states that bedbug bites generally do not require medical treatment other than topical medications or lotions; however, pest control measures are necessary to eliminate the bugs from the affected area.
