Religious adviser warns against taking law into own hands
Bangla Press Desk: Religious Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain has asked all to avoid seeking mob justice, and to refrain from taking law into own hands since there are the judiciary and the government to punish culprits.
Failure to comply would lead to legal repercussions, the adviser warned adding “nobody is above the law.” None must do anything that disrupts the upcoming elections, he added.
He made the remarks at the International Quran Recitation Conference hosted at Baitul Mukarram mosque on Friday.
The remarks come in the wake of multiple mob attacks, carried out by ultra-religious “Tawhidi Janata” group, on baul artistes across the country. The attacks targeted demonstrations by bauls against the detention of Baul Abul Sarkar over alleged heresy.
Abul Sarkar’s controversial interpretation of the Quran has landed him in prison over blasphemy. Different groups of artistes and civil society members have condemned the arrest.
Adviser Khalid said only the authorised Islamic scholars have the right to provide interpretations of Quran.
