Shafiqur Calls for Collective Action Against Extortion

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman

Bangla Press Desk:   Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called for a united movement against extortion.
“It is now the demand of the time to build another movement against extortion, together with the people. To protect lives and property from extortionists, all who love the country must fight collectively. We will continue this struggle, InshaAllah,” he said in a post on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, condemning the killing of a Laguna driver at Jatrabari in the capital allegedly over extortion.
The Jamaat chief criticised what he described as the normalisation of the extortion culture, saying, "The culture of extortion has been nationalised in such a way that not paying extortion appears to be treated as a crime. When legitimacy is given to extortion from the leadership position, the responsibility will lie with all concerned. Will innocent people continue to lose their lives like this? No, we cannot accept this and will not accept this."
Meanwhile, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested an accused in connection with the murder of the Laguna driver. The arrestee, identified as Sohan Munshi, was detained on Saturday evening by a team of RAB-10 from the Kutubkhali Fish Market area, according to a press release issued on Sunday.
He was later handed over to the police for further legal proceedings.
According to RAB, the incident occurred around 2:45pm on Friday following a dispute over vehicle serials at a Laguna stand on the Chattogram Road at Jatrabari. During the altercation, Laguna driver Md Nur-e-Alam Islam, also known as Khairul, was allegedly beaten indiscriminately.
RAB said Sohan Munshi and his associates carried out the attack in a premeditated manner.
The victim was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
A murder case was filed the following day at Jatrabari Police Station. Source: daily Sun
