Bangla Press Desk:  The 152nd birth anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq will be observed today across the country.

Popularly known as Sher-e-Bangla (The Tiger of Bengal) or Huq Saheb, he was born on 26 October 1873. Various political organisations have planned programmes to mark the occasion, with leaders and activists expected to lay floral tributes and offer prayers at his grave adjacent to Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka at 8am.

Fazlul Huq was born at his maternal uncle’s house in Saturia, then part of Bakerganj district, now in Jhalakathi, Barishal division. The son of Kazi Mohammad Wazed and Sayedunnesa Khatun, he became one of the most prominent public leaders of his time in Bengal.

Huq served as secretary of the Bengal Provincial Muslim League and joint secretary of the All India Muslim League from 1913 to 1916. He also held the position of president of the All India Muslim League from 1916 to 1921.

During his political career, he held several high offices, including Mayor of Calcutta (1935), Chief Minister of undivided Bengal (1937-1943) and East Pakistan (1954), Home Minister of Pakistan (1955), and Governor of East Pakistan (1956-1958). He is also remembered for moving the famous Lahore Resolution in 1940.

Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq passed away on 27 April 1962 in Dhaka at the age of 88.
