Tania Tunu becomes Bangladeshi-origin councillor in France
Bangla Press Desk: Tania Tunu, a Bangladeshi-origin woman, has been elected as a councillor in France’s municipal elections, marking a significant milestone for the community’s representation, particularly among women.
Tania secured victory in the second round of voting held on Sunday (22 March) from Garges-lès-Gonesse, running on a panel backed by La France Humaniste Party.Originally from Sunamganj in Bangladesh, Tania is a lawyer by profession. Her achievement is being seen as an inspiring example for the Bangladeshi diaspora, especially for women who remain underrepresented in mainstream French politics.
Speaking to journalists after her victory, Tania said she aims to work for the development and wellbeing of the local community. “I want to stand by the people and uphold their trust,” she said.Mahbub Hossain, coordinator of the France-Bangladesh Journalists Association (FBJA), said Tania’s success sets a strong example for Bangladeshi women. He noted that, compared to other communities, Bangladeshi women are still less visible in France’s mainstream political landscape, and Tania’s election signals a positive shift.
In addition to Tania, four other Bangladeshi-origin candidates were elected as councillors in this year’s municipal polls. They are Nahidul Mohammad (Saint-Denis), Fahim Mohammad (Créteil), Kaushik Rabbani (Stains), and Zubayed Ahmed (Ivry-sur-Seine). Their victories collectively highlight the growing political engagement of the Bangladeshi community in France.Source: daily Sun
