Tk3.39cr toll collected on Jamuna Bridge in 24 hours
Bangla Press Desk: A total of Tk33.9 million in toll was collected from the Jamuna Bridge in the last 24 hours as homebound travellers headed to celebrate Eid with their loved ones, increasing pressure on highways.
Traffic flow has intensified on different highways, particularly on the Tangail–Jamuna highway, in line with previous Eid travel rushes.According to bridge authorities, some 46,943 vehicles crossed the Jamuna Bridge between midnight Monday and midnight Tuesday.
Of them, 19,445 vehicles were Dhaka-bound, generating Tk1.66 crore in tolls. Meanwhile, 27,498 vehicles travelled towards northern districts, contributing around Tk1.73 crore in toll collections.
Executive Engineer Syed Riaz Uddin said a total of 18 booths -- nine on each side of the bridge -- have been set up to ensure smooth movement of vehicles during the Eid journey. Of these, two booths on each side have been designated exclusively for motorcycles.
The bridge authority has been collecting tolls since the structure was opened in 1998. On average, around 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles use the bridge daily, but the number doubles or even triples during Eid travel.
Traffic congestion during the period is often caused by increased vehicle pressure, drivers’ inefficiency and road accidents.Source: daily Sun
