Trump says Netanyahu 'won't be hitting' Qatar again
Bangla Press Desk:  US President Donald Trump insisted Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would not strike Qatar again amid a shakeup in Arab approach to Israel in response to an attack on Washington’s ally last week targeting Hamas. "He won't be hitting in Qatar," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, after Netanyahu failed to rule out further strikes during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jerusalem. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that only Qatar had the ability to mediate in Gaza, despite an Israeli strike on Hamas in the Gulf country a week ago. "Obviously they have to decide if they want to do that after last week or not, but we want them to know that if there's any country in the world that could help end this through a negotiation it's Qatar," Rubio told reporters as he flew to Doha from Israel.
An Arab and Muslim leaders’ summit on Monday has nudged US efforts to contain the fallout from last week's deadly Israeli strike on Hamas members in the Qatari capital. The Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation joint session, which brought together nearly 60 countries, called for a review of ties with Israel. A joint statement from the summit urged "all States to take all possible legal and effective measures to prevent Israel from continuing its actions against the Palestinian people", including "reviewing diplomatic and economic relations with it, and initiating legal proceedings against it". Qatar's fellow Gulf nations the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, along with Egypt, Jordan and Morocco, were among those present that recognise Israel.
The leaders of the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco, which signed the Abraham Accords recognising Israel five years ago to the day, did not attend Monday's talks, sending senior representatives instead. The statement also urged member states to "coordinate efforts aimed at suspending Israel's membership in the United Nations".  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
