UNESCO celebrates Dhaka’s rickshaw painting as vibrant living heritage
Bangla Press Desk: UNESCO has highlighted Dhaka’s rickshaw painting as a significant part of Bangladesh’s living cultural heritage, sharing images of the city’s colourful rickshaws on their Facebook page on Sunday.
“Rickshaws and rickshaw painting in Dhaka represent a well-known cultural tradition recognised as part of Bangladesh’s intangible cultural heritage,” UNESCO said.
The agency noted that the craft involves both the builders and painters, with skills passed on through hands-on training in small workshops. Each rickshaw is uniquely decorated with bright illustrations of flowers, nature, stories, and popular figures, transforming Dhaka’s streets into a lively display of urban creativity. The tradition has become an integral part of everyday life and a source of identity for many communities.
UNESCO added that the practice was included in its Representative List in 2023, highlighting the cultural value of the art form and the people who continue the tradition.
The post concluded by thanking followers for engaging with their five-day series on Bangladesh’s living heritage.
