US apparently loses India, Russia to ‘deepest, darkest China:’ Trump
Bangla Press Desk: US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed it appears that he has lost his allies India and Russia to the “deepest and darkest China.” “May they have a long and prosperous future together!,” he wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform. Trump also attached an image, which shows the three Asia-Pacific leaders together during their visit to Chinese city Tianjin last week. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Indian Prime Minister are pictured in Trump’s post, as they joined the annual summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), widely seen as a China-led geopolitical initiative to challenge Western hegemony.
This year’s summit has drawn heightened attention in the wake of Trump’s punitive additional tariffs on rivals and allies alike. China has broadly seized the opportunity handed by Trump, roping in India and other key Western allies against US-led hegemony. Though Vladimir Putin has been a regular guest of SCO summits, Modi’s attendance unnerved Westerners. India has been a historic Western ally and an archrival of China, for long maintaining a noticeable distance with China-led initiatives. However, in late August, Modi made his first visit to China in seven years, days after his government failed to persuade the Trump administration to cancel 50% additional tariff on Indian exports. Trump’s warlike trade revamp has clearly disappointed his long-time ally Modi, pushing the Indian leader into China’s fold.
The US president has topped up his initial 25% counter tariffs with another 25% to pressurize New Delhi into stopping Russian oil purchases, which helps fund Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Delhi has repeatedly declined to halt Russian fuel imports. This article was originally published on Daily Sun. [Bangla Press is a global platform for free thought.
