Video of NCP leader’s extortion goes viral
Bangla Press Desk:  Nizam Uddin, Joint Coordinator of the Chattogram City unit of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has been accused of demanding Tk 500,000 to suppress a port-related protest. A video that went viral on social media allegedly captures him engaged in a conversation about a money transaction. The footage, which spread on Facebook on Sunday evening (August 10), features him asking for money to halt the protest. Earlier, on July 5, a woman submitted a written complaint to the Police Commissioner, alleging that Nizam Uddin had filed a false case against her husband after failing to extort Tk 2 crore. At that time, Nizam was serving as the member secretary of the Chattogram City unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Following the complaint, his post was suspended but was later reinstated. In the one-and-a-half-minute video shared on Facebook, a man named Aftab Hossain Rifat is seen speaking to Nizam Uddin via Messenger call, which is being recorded on another phone. At the start, Aftab asks, “If Mir bhai and the others don’t stop the protest, then what will we do?” Nizam responds, “I’ll make sure the protest is stopped. Did they give you money?” Aftab replies, “Yes.”
When asked how much was given, Aftab answers, “Five.” Nizam is then heard saying, “You should have taken more by putting pressure… see if you can get another five lakh from them. If you can, I’ll bring it to Rohan and Mir and give them something.” Party members confirmed that Aftab Hossain is the coordinator for the port-related activities of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Chattogram. The video was uploaded by the movement’s former joint member secretary of the city unit, Rahadul Islam, who wrote, “By suppressing the movement against Saif Powertec, Nizam Uddin embezzled Tk 500,000. This is not just corruption—it is a direct betrayal of the trust of students and the people.” Speaking to the media on Sunday evening, Rahadul Islam said, “Someone gave me the video. Nizam had previously faced extortion allegations. Now there’s an accusation that he took money from Saif Powertec to suppress the port-related protest.” NCP Chattogram City Chief Coordinator Mir Arshadul Haque told the media, “When forming the NCP committee, we sought feedback from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement regarding him after previous allegations. Based on their positive response, he was kept in the committee. Now that allegations have surfaced again, we will seek an explanation from him in accordance with party procedure.” This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
