‘Villain of One-Eleven’ General Masud arrested

General Masud Uddin Chowdhury

Staff Reporter: Former Feni-3 Member of Parliament and retired three-star general Masud Uddin Chowdhury has been arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police. He was widely discussed during the military-backed caretaker government period.

The retired general was detained late Monday night (March 23) during a raid at his residence in the Baridhara DOHS area of Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan DB chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest, stating that a late-night operation was conducted in the capital to apprehend him.

Although police said there are “around five” cases filed against General Masud, details of those cases were not immediately disclosed.

Authorities said he was arrested from house number 153 on lane 2 in Baridhara DOHS.

In 2007, Masud served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army’s 9th Division and later became the coordinator of the National Coordination Committee on Combating Serious Crimes following the political shift of January 11 (“One-Eleven”).

In June 2008, he was appointed Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Australia, a role he continued in until June 2011 under the Awami League government that came to power in 2009.

In 2018, he joined the Jatiya Party and was elected as a Member of Parliament from Feni-3 (Sonagazi and Daganbhuiyan) in the 11th parliamentary election.

Before that election, he had initially collected a nomination form from the Awami League but, within five days, purchased a nomination form from the Jatiya Party. The following day, he became a member of the party’s presidium.
