Viral fever sweeping across country
Bangla Press Desk:   A wave of viral fever with symptoms resembling dengue, chikungunya, and typhoid, including high fever, joint pain, and headaches, is sweeping across the country, overwhelming hospitals, clinics, and local dispensaries in recent weeks. Although the rise in cases has sparked concern among the public, doctors say most of the infections appear to be seasonal viral fevers, with patients typically recovering within a week. Speaking to the Daily Sun, Dr Abdul Al Mamun Majumder, a physician in Lalmai upazila of Cumilla, said, “Every day I see 20 to 25 patients in my chamber and most of them come in with fever. Common symptoms include high temperature and body ache. Earlier, most patients recovered in three to four days, but now many have fevers lasting seven to eight days.” “There’s no reason to panic. To me, it seems to be a seasonal flu virus. Most patients recover with basic medication,” he added.
Rafikul Islam, a resident of Amulia under Demra in the capital said three members of his family have been suffering from fever since Thursday night. “My wife, Amena Islam, 33, and daughters Amatullah Tasnim, 4, and Labiba Afrin, 8 months, all have high temperatures, body aches, runny noses, and coughs. I haven’t seen a doctor yet but started basic treatment from a local pharmacy. Many of my relatives are experiencing the same.” Rakibul Hasan, a private job holder, said his wife has been ill since Friday. “She has had high fever, headaches, and severe body pain. I gave her antibiotics, but it hasn’t helped. She’s so weak now, she can barely stand.” He noted that both he and his brother had similar symptoms earlier but recovered quickly with over-the-counter medicine. Pharmacies across the capital are also witnessing a spike in demand for fever-related medicines. “Over the past month, sales of fever medications and oral saline have surged,” said Mostaque Ahmed, a pharmacist in the Vatara area. “Patients crowd the shop daily, mostly complaining of high fever. I advise anyone with fever lasting more than three days to consult a doctor and get tested for dengue and chikungunya.”
Dr Nishat Parvin, chief health officer of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), acknowledged a rise in reported fever cases. “We’re seeing a lot of reports of fever, but dengue numbers are not particularly high. Unfortunately, we don’t have testing kits for chikungunya and other viruses, so we can’t confirm what type of fever patients are experiencing.” Brig Gen Imru-al-Quais, chief health officer of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), echoed similar concerns. “It appears to be a seasonal flu virus. Most patients recover without complications. I receive daily reports from at least 17 hospitals, and dengue cases remain low.” “Flu and dengue viruses often circulate at the same time, which creates confusion. Most cases involve typical flu symptoms like runny nose, cough, and high fever. However, cases involving severe joint pain could be chikungunya—and unfortunately, that test isn’t widely available.” he added. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
