Banglapress Desk: Workers of different garments staged demonstrations in different parts of Dhaka city for sixth consecutive day on Saturday demanding cancellation of discriminatory wage board announced by the government for them.
The protesting workers took to the streets in the morning and put up barricade at Mirpur-1 and Ansar Camp areas in Kolyanpur, halting vehicular movement. Besides, the workers are also staging demonstrations at Shewrapara and Kazipara areas. They also vandalised several establishments on the footpath in the area.
Earlier in the morning, the RMG workers vandalised at least 20 vehicles on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Ashulia of Dhaka while staging demonstration over the same issue. Earlier, Police used water cannons and charged batons on agitating workers who are demonstrating to revise their wage.
The demo began six days back protesting disparity in the new wage structure of RMG workers. On Saturday, the sixth day of the demo, the workers blocked Dhaka-Tangail highway at Ashulia point, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
Police sources said that nearly a thousand workers of five garment factories took to the streets in Jamgora area around 9:30am for the sixth day, halting traffic movement in the highway.
Police had to charge batons and use water cannons to disperse the agitating workers in a bid to resume vehicular movement on the highway.
