Iqbal arrest in country after stealing money from expat wife in Boston

Staff Reporter: A Boston expatriate Bangladeshi Iqbal Uddin (26) has been arrested by the police for the crime of stealing 9 lakh taka saved by the first wife of a Boston expatriate and married second time in the country. Last Sunday (December 3) around 11:30 pm, when an arrest warrant was issued by Sadar Court in the case filed by Iqbal’s first wife Yasmin Sultana at Chuadanga Police Station, Chattogram’s Sitakunda Police Station arrested and sent Iqbal to jail.
According to the complaint, Iqbal Uddin, son of Md. Ikramuddin of Dakshin Idilpur village of Sitakunda police station of Chattogram, immigrated to the United States in 2012. After going to the country after almost 3 years, on January 26, 2015 married Yasmin Sultana daughter of deceased Abdul Wahab at village of Sadek Ali Mallik Chuadanga police station. They got married with the consent of Iqbal’s family knowing about her previous marriage and 2 children. Later, after Yasmin came to the United States, Iqbal’s mother and sisters regularly teased about her previous marriage and childrens. Yasmin was living with Iqbal since 2015 despite all their mental and physical pains. Iqbal had not worked since he came to the United States. His wife ran the whole household. Iqbal even took regular pocket expenses from Yasmin. At one point Yasmin and her family were pressured for a dowry of 5 lakh taka. Sometimes he threatened to divorce Yasmin. When she refused to pay the money, Iqbal started playing tricks and acting with Yasmin. When nothing worked, Iqbal stole 8 thousand dollars (about 9 lakhs in Bangladeshi currency) saved by his wife and fled to Bangladesh on August 7, 2023. In this regard, on November 19, Yasmin filed a complaint with the Boston Police and got married there for the second time in her native Sitakunda.


On hearing this news, Yasmin rushed to Bangladesh on November 24. That afternoon, her nephew Tauhid Alam filed a complaint on Yasmin’s behalf with the Chuadanga Police Station (Case No.: Chu.J.A.S-23171). When the police sent the case to the court, on December 1, the learned judge of Chuadanga Sadar Court issued an arrest warrant and sent it to Sitakunda police station. Last Sunday (December 3) around 11:30 pm, Sitakunda police station arrested Iqbal and sent him to jail.


Yasmin Sultana, Iqbal’s expatriate wife in Boston, said that since he came to the United States, Iqbal did not do any work. Iqbal taking lots of money from the Bangladeshi people of Boston on various pretexts. He has been accused of extorting a sum of money from several youths from Dhaka and Sitakunda areas by taking them to the United States. During his stay in Boston he was involved in BNP politics and Bangladesh Association of New England (BANE). He was also a Jamat Shibir worker while in Bangladesh. Yasmin said that he also had illicit relations with several girls in Boston. The news of Iqbal’s arrest has created quite a stir among the Bangladeshis living in Boston.
